Growing Without Roots

The fragile little plant puts down tiny roots and sprouts tiny leaves.
Her roots grow stronger and her leaves get bigger.
Life is good.

Suddenly one day, the little plant is pulled abruptly from the ground.
She is tossed into a box.

She is taken to a new spot and replanted in the ground.
She is unhappy.

The roots grow into the soil.
The leaves receive sun and water.
She grows.
Life is good again.

Then one day, the not-so-little plant is again pulled up.
Once again, she is put into a box.

Again, she is replanted in a new strange spot.
This time, her roots don't go deep.  Her leaves don't grow.
Life is not quite as good.

The next  time she is ripped from the ground, she is prepared.
She will live on the surface from now on.
Her roots won't go deep.
Her leaves won't grow.
But she won't be hurt again.
She is safe.
